FOR THE ONES

REBUILDING

FOR THE ONES REBUILDING

Stories that
heal. Strength
that endures.

Heidi Joy writes from the mess - learning through the lessons and challenges thrown her way. Honest stories of trauma, transition and rebuilding, for anyone who has ever lost themselves and had to find a new way back.

Magic in the Mess is Heidi’s debut memoir-honest, gritty, and deeply personal. From 14 years in the Australian Defence Force to medical discharge, the Invictus Games, and rebuilding a life and career from the ground up, this is a story told exactly as it was—unfiltered, real, and unapologetic.

Because healing doesn't happen in straight lines. It happens in small, imperfect, human moments. And sometimes, that's exactly where the magic finds you.

Rebuild. rise. reclaim.

for the ones
rebuilding.

For 14 years, I served in the Australian Defence Force. That service shaped me - my discipline, my identity, my understanding of what it means to be part of something bigger than yourself.

But it also cost me. Injury. Burnout. A medical discharge I didn't see coming. And a long, disorienting stretch of not knowing who I was without the structure that had held me together.

If any of that sounds familiar - whether you've worn a uniform or not - you're in the right place. I believe movement is medicine. I believe honest storytelling heals. And I believe that rebuilding isn't a moment - it's a practice. One that looks different for everyone, and rarely goes in a straight line.

This space is for the ones who are still in it. Still figuring it out. Still showing up even when it's hard. You don't have to have it together to start.

Guided by Courage.

Hi, I’m Heidi Joy - a veteran, Accredited Exercise Physiologist, author, athlete, and advocate. More importantly, I’m someone who has had to rebuild my life more than once after everything I thought I knew was stripped away.

I served in the Australian Defence Force for 14 years. I was medically discharged. I competed at the Invictus Games. I’ve rebuilt a career, a body, and a life - not in that order, and certainly not in a straight line.

As an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, I’ve spent years helping people reconnect with their bodies after injury, illness, and life’s unexpected challenges. Over the past year, I’ve been focusing on my own recovery and healing from burnout. Writing became part of that journey - a way to reflect, make sense of life’s challenges, and find meaning in the experiences that shaped me. In many ways, Magic in the Mess became a reminder that even in our hardest seasons, there is still growth, purpose, and a little magic waiting to be found.

Magic in the Mess is my story.

I wrote it for anyone navigating change, loss, injury, burnout, uncertainty, or the moments in life that force us to start again. While much of my journey is shaped by military service and transition, the lessons within these pages are universal: resilience, purpose, hope, and the courage to keep moving forward when life doesn’t go to plan.

If life has ever knocked you off course, I hope these pages help you find your way forward.

This book didn’t just tell my story - it helped rebuild me.

Whether you’re here to reflect, rebuild, reclaim something within yourself, or simply feel less alone in your own journey, I’m glad you’re here.

Rebuild. Rise. Reclaim.
